Heroes of the Somme (32 minutes)
After the disastrous Gallipoli campaign in 1915, Australian army troops were sent to the Western Front in France to fight with the Allies in the many battles of the Great War from 1916 to 1918. Australia earned itself a great fighting reputation over those three years including battles fought at the Somme, Ypres, Fromelles, Pozieres, Flanders, Passchendaele, and Villers-Bretonneux. In 1998, The French Government held a ceremony to honour many of the Australian troops that fought and died in these battles. The Australian Government took the four remaining WW I veterans to France to receive the French Legion of Honour on behalf of the 300,000 Australians who fought there, including 42,000 killed in action. This documentary tells the story of this moving occasion. This video was produced by Gavin Dutfield and David Webster. Commentary is courtesy of Dr Jonathan King.
